What is TMJ?
TMJ stands for the Temporal-Mandibular joint, connecting the skull to the lower jaw. Often overlooked, our TMJ is tiny but complex, and issues which arise from this area can lead to chronic tension that may affect our daily lives.
The specialised TMJ treatments I provide are designed to relieve tension, pain and dysfunction in the temporal-mandibular joint and surrounding areas. I take a whole body approach, using remedial massage techniques, trigger point therapy, acupressure, and myofascial release of the jaw (intra-oral) to treat symptoms.
Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction can affect the muscles surrounding the jaw, leading to inflammation and restrictions of the facial muscles and fascia (connective tissue), resulting in pain, jaw misalignment and facial assymetry.
There are over sixty muscles in the face, and facial tension is often caused by factors such as stress, posture, bruxism, previous injuries, anxiety, structural imbalances, and emotional challenges. Our mind and body are connected through a network of cells, systems and organs so there may be various factors to consider when experiencing TMJ Dysfunction.
Whether you book an appointment to ease chronic pain or as a preventative measure, I will treat you with knowledge, skill and compassion so that together we can achieve the best results for you from every treatment.

Treatments are tailored to the individual depending on what is discussed in the consultation during the first session. The following should be expected:
External massage, trigger point therapy and acupressure can be applied to the whole body including back, hips, feet, shoulders, neck, jaw and head. The main focus of the treatment will be on the facial muscles using techniques taken from Japanese and Indian massage.
Intra-oral massage: (Optional) Internal work on the jaw muscles using gloves for precise muscle and fascia release.
Stretching and self-care guidance: Exercises to improve jaw function and relaxation techniques may be given.

Some areas may feel tender or sore, especially if there is significant muscle tightness. However, the pressure can be suited to your needs and you are in control at all times.
My approach is usually gentle and nurturing, targeting the muscles and tissue through myofascial release.

No, intraoral massage is optional, but highly effective. External techniques alone can provide significant release, but these intra-oral techniques are highly effective at stimulating your parasympathetic nervous system and letting go of unnecessary tension.

Most clients notice improvement within 2-4 sessions, though results can vary. Ongoing maintenance may be required. You may be advised to work with a Chiropractor or Osteopath as well as massage treatment.
